## Image Caption

[Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) marble relief showing a small two-masted coastal sailing vessel called *corbita*, as well as its sailour. Found at [Carthage](https://www.worldhistory.org/carthage/) and possibly made in [Africa](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/africa/) Proconsularis (modern-day Tunisia) circa 200 CE.

Corbita boats had two sails, most likely made out of cloth and leather reinforcement at the corners. Boats such as this would have carried out significant amounts of trading around the Mediterraneanan, sailing in coastal waters from harbour to harbour.

British Museum, London, UK. GR 1850.3-4.32.
