A c. 1860 portrait by Léon Cogniet of Madame Barbe-Nicole Clicquot-Ponsardin (1777-1866) who made many developments in the Champagne-making process and was responsible for innovative marketing strategies for the sparkling wine. She is better known today simply as the Widow Clicquot or [Veuve Clicquot](https://www.worldhistory.org/article/2800/veuve-clicquot/), after which the Champagne brand is named.
