A portrait of [Edward Montagu, Earl of Manchester](https://www.worldhistory.org/Edward_Montagu,_Earl_of_Manchester/) (1602-1671). Manchester commanded one of the main armies of the Parliamentarians during the [English Civil Wars](https://www.worldhistory.org/English_Civil_Wars/) (1642-51) until he was discredited for his performance in the indecisive [Second Battle of Newbury](https://www.worldhistory.org/article/1908/second-battle-of-newbury/) in October 1644. The Earl is wearing the cloak and badge of the [Order of the Garter](https://www.worldhistory.org/Order_of_the_Garter/). Painted by Peter Lely in the second half of the 17th century.
