Elizabethan [England](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/england/)'s [trade](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/trade/) with [Europe](https://www.worldhistory.org/europe/) around 1600 formed part of a changing early modern commercial system in which established regional networks coexisted with new forms of organized overseas enterprise. English exports remained heavily dependent on woolen textiles, particularly through the Merchant Adventurers and markets in the Low Countries and Germany, while merchants imported grain, wine, metals, timber, naval stores, luxury goods, and [Mediterranean](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/mediterranean/) commodities. Crown-chartered and regulated companies such as the Muscovy Company and [Levant](https://www.worldhistory.org/levant/) Company helped merchants enter more distant or politically complex markets by combining commercial privileges with diplomacy and collective organization. The Merchant Adventurers remained particularly influential in English cloth exports around the beginning of the seventeenth century.

Trade was shaped not only by supply and demand but also by [war](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/), diplomatic alliances, monopolies, and rivalry among English, Dutch, Hanseatic, Iberian, and other merchants. The chartering of the [East India Company](https://www.worldhistory.org/East_India_Company/) in 1600 symbolized England's growing interest in direct long-distance commerce, but this should not obscure the continuing importance of European trade: England's later global expansion developed from an [economy](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/economy/) that was still strongly connected to the commercial networks of northern and Mediterranean Europe.
