A painting by Charles Landseer, *The Eve of the [Battle of Edgehill](https://www.worldhistory.org/article/1899/battle-of-edgehill/)*, the first major [battle](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/battle/) of the [English Civil Wars](https://www.worldhistory.org/English_Civil_Wars/) (1642-51). The battle took place on 23 October 1642 between Royalist and Parliamentary forces. The result was indecisive. Standing in the centre is [Charles I of England](https://www.worldhistory.org/Charles_I_of_England/) (r. 1625-1649) and seated on the left is his nephew Prince Rupert (1619-82).
