The [Gupta Empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/Gupta_Empire/) (c. 320–550 CE) emerged from the [Magadha](https://www.worldhistory.org/Magadha_Kingdom/) (modern Bihar), establishing political dominance over much of northern, central, and western [India](https://www.worldhistory.org/india/). Its rise marked a transition from regional fragmentation to imperial consolidation following the decline of earlier dynasties. Through strategic marriages, military expansion, and effective administration, the Guptas created a relatively stable [empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/empire/) that facilitated economic growth, long-distance [trade](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/trade/), and cultural exchange across the subcontinent. This period is often described as a “Golden Age” of Indian history due to the durability of its political structures and its lasting cultural influence.

Imperial authority expanded under a sequence of powerful rulers, including [Chandragupta](https://www.worldhistory.org/Chandragupta_Maurya/) I (reign 320–335 CE), [Samudragupta](https://www.worldhistory.org/Samudragupta/) (reign c. 335–375 CE), and [Chandragupta II](https://www.worldhistory.org/Chandragupta_II/) (reign c. 380–415 CE), whose reigns saw territorial expansion, administrative refinement, and royal patronage of learning. Advances in mathematics, astronomy, [medicine](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/medicine/), [literature](https://www.worldhistory.org/literature/), and the visual arts flourished, while [Sanskrit](https://www.worldhistory.org/Sanskrit/) became the dominant language of elite [culture](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/culture/) and governance. From the mid-5th century onward, however, sustained external pressures, most notably raids by the Hephthalites ([White Huns](https://www.worldhistory.org/White_Huns_(Hephthalites)/)), weakened imperial control. By the mid-6th century, the empire fragmented into smaller regional kingdoms, bringing [Gupta](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/gupta/) political dominance to an end while leaving behind a profound cultural and intellectual legacy.
