A c. 1575 CE portrait of [Elizabeth I of England](https://www.worldhistory.org/Elizabeth_I_of_England/) (r. 1588-1603 CE) known as the 'Phoenix Portrait'. The work is by Nicholas Hilliard (1547-1619) and is named after the pendant the queen wears hanging on her chest. The phoenix symbolizes regeneration and chastity. The bird hangs from a [gold](https://www.worldhistory.org/gold/) Tudor Rose with a dark central jewel. Her dress is studded with pearls, a symbol of purity, and she holds a feather fan in her left hand and a rose in her right.

National Portrait Gallery, London.
