*Tughra* traditionally functioned as the signature or seal of the Ottoman sultans in a calligraphic way. Placed at the beginning of any official correspondence, it symbolized the sultanic authority. This monogram is the tughra of Suleiman the Magnificient (r. 1520-1566), the tenth sultan of the [Ottoman Empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/Ottoman_Empire/), in [gold](https://www.worldhistory.org/gold/) and blue ink on paper.
