Naqsh-e Jahan Square is a public urban square situated at the centre of Isfahan in Iran. Constructed by Shah Abbas I the Great at the beginning of the 17th century CE, it is now an important historical site and one of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites. Naqsh-e Jahan Square is one of the largest [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/) squares in the world and an outstanding example of Iranian and Islamic [architecture](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/architecture/). It is surrounded by monumental buildings; the Royal Mosque, the Mosque of Sheykh Lotfollah, the magnificent Portico of Qaysariyyeh and the 15th-century Timurid [palace](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/palace/).
