Cartagena was one of the main ports for the [Spanish treasure fleets](https://www.worldhistory.org/Spanish_Treasure_Fleets/) and acted as a collecting point for [gold](https://www.worldhistory.org/gold/), [silver](https://www.worldhistory.org/Silver/), emeralds, and pearls from Colombia and Venezuela.
