Hadrian inherited an [empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/empire/) that had reached its greatest territorial extent following Trajan’s eastern campaigns, but he relinquished most of the recently conquered territories beyond the Euphrates and favored more defensible frontiers. His extensive journeys between 117 and 133 CE formed an important part of this policy. Hadrian inspected provincial armies, reinforced military discipline and frontier systems, and maintained direct contact with provincial administrations and communities. His visit to [Britannia](https://www.worldhistory.org/Roman_Britain/) in 122 CE coincided with the beginning of Hadrian’s [Wall](https://www.worldhistory.org/wall/), while inspections of the Rhine, Danube, African, Syrian, and Cappadocian frontiers demonstrated his emphasis on defense and military preparedness rather than continued territorial [conquest](https://www.worldhistory.org/warfare/). Hadrian’s policies also strengthened cultural and political connections between [Rome](https://www.worldhistory.org/Rome/) and the provinces, although the stability of his reign should not be overstated. A committed supporter of [Greek culture](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Greek_Culture/), Hadrian gave particular patronage to [Athens](https://www.worldhistory.org/Athens/) and supported civic, religious, and architectural projects across the empire; major construction also continued in Rome, including the rebuilding of the [Pantheon](https://www.worldhistory.org/Pantheon/). His prolonged presence outside [Italy](https://www.worldhistory.org/italy/) helped project imperial authority directly into provincial society and distinguished his style of government from emperors whose travel had been primarily associated with [warfare](https://www.worldhistory.org/warfare/).
