From the 8th century BCE, the Greeks settled southern Italy (Magna Graecia) and [Sicily](https://www.worldhistory.org/sicily/). Over time, the colonies became independent from their mother [cities](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/) and developed their own [economy](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/economy/) and art styles. Medma and [Gela](https://www.worldhistory.org/Gela/)'s local art style used clay and [bronze](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/bronze/), as there was no marble nearby.
