The painting presents the key moment of the Germanicus’ campaign in Germania. The battle involved four [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) legions, [Legio I Germanica](https://www.worldhistory.org/Legio_I_Germanica/), [Legio V Alaudae](https://www.worldhistory.org/Legio_V_Alaudae/), Legio XX Valeria Victrix, and [Legio XXI Rapax](https://www.worldhistory.org/Legio_XXI_Rapax/) led by Caecina against the German tribes commanded by [Arminius](https://www.worldhistory.org/Arminius/). Despite Caecina's victory the battle was near-fatal and cost the [Roman army](https://www.worldhistory.org/Roman_Army/) many men.
