## Image Caption

An illustration portraying [Sif](https://www.worldhistory.org/Sif/), a goddess in the Norse [pantheon](https://www.worldhistory.org/Pantheon/). She was associated with earth but was married to [Thor](https://www.worldhistory.org/Thor/), the [god](https://www.worldhistory.org/God/) of the sky and thunder. Sif is a relatively little known figure who appears mainly in the *Poetic [Edda](https://www.worldhistory.org/Edda/)* from the 13th century. She is most well known from the story about her hair being deceitfully cut off by the trickster [Loki](https://www.worldhistory.org/Loki/). Thor coerced Loki to compensate Sif for this prank. As a result of this, Loki gave her the golden headpiece made by drafts.

This illustration focuses on the image of Sif as being the goddess of the earth, harvest and wheat. It comes from the Swedish *Edda* translation published in 1893.
