## Image Caption

An illustration portraying [Sif](https://www.worldhistory.org/Sif/), a golden-haired goddess in the Norse [pantheon](https://www.worldhistory.org/Pantheon/). She was associated with earth but was married to [Thor](https://www.worldhistory.org/Thor/), the [god](https://www.worldhistory.org/God/) of the sky and thunder. Sif is a relatively little-known figure who appears mainly in the *Poetic [Edda](https://www.worldhistory.org/Edda/)* from the 13th century. She is most well known from the story about her hair being deceitfully cut off by the trickster [Loki](https://www.worldhistory.org/Loki/). Thor coerced Loki to compensate Sif for this prank. As a result of this, Loki gave her the golden headpiece made by drafts.

The image appears in a book by James Baldwin titled *School Reading By Grades: Fourth Year* that was published around 1897.
