*Hermod Before Hela*, illustration of the [god](https://www.worldhistory.org/God/) Hermod kneeling before [Hel](https://www.worldhistory.org/Hel/), Norse goddess of the dead in the realm of Hel by English artist and illustrator John Charles Dollman, published in *Myths of the Norsemen from the [Eddas](https://www.worldhistory.org/Edda/) and Sagas* by Guerber, H. A., Harrap, London, 1909.

In this scene, Hermod asks for the return of the soul of the god [Baldr](https://www.worldhistory.org/Baldr/) to life. Hel consented on the condition that everything in the [Nine Realms of Norse cosmology](https://www.worldhistory.org/article/1305/nine-realms-of-norse-cosmology/) should weep for Baldr. When the giantess Throk refused, Baldr had to remain in the afterlife.
