## Image Caption

A speculative portrait of [Henry Hudson](https://www.worldhistory.org/Henry_Hudson/) (c. 1565 -1611 CE) that was made around 1885. Hudson was an English sea navigator who explored areas of present-day Canada and parts of the modern New York metropolitan area. He was working for the [Dutch East India Company](https://www.worldhistory.org/Dutch_East_India_Company/) thereby starting the Dutch [colonization](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/colonization/) of the region. He was captaining a legendary ship called Halve Maen ("Half Moon") that sailed into what is now New York Harbor.
