A painting portraying the capture of [Atahualpa](https://www.worldhistory.org/Atahualpa/) (r. 1532-33), the [Inca](https://www.worldhistory.org/Inca_Civilization/) emperor, by the Spanish [conquistador](https://www.worldhistory.org/Conquistador/) and adventurer [Francisco Pizarro](https://www.worldhistory.org/Francisco_Pizarro/) on 16 November 1532. This capture was considered to be the first step of the long [conquest](https://www.worldhistory.org/warfare/) of the Inca [civilisation](https://www.worldhistory.org/civilization/) by the Spanish [Empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/empire/).
