Mot Cot Pagoda is a pagoda in the center of Hanoi. It was built in 1049 CE by Li Thanh Tong King. The [temple](https://www.worldhistory.org/temple/) is constructed of wood on a single stone pillar 1.25 m in diameter, and it is designed to resemble a lotus blossom, which is a [Buddhist](https://www.worldhistory.org/buddhism/) symbol of purity (as lotus often thrives in muddy ponds). In 1954 CE, the French Union forces destroyed the pagoda before withdrawing from Vietnam after the First Indochina [War](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/War/) and it was subsequently rebuilt.
