The [Hellenistic](https://www.worldhistory.org/Hellenic_World/) Successor Kingdoms (the *Diadochi*, from the [Greek](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/greek/) for “Successors”) emerged after the [death of Alexander the Great](https://www.worldhistory.org/article/2366/death-of-alexander-the-great/) in 323 BCE, when his vast [empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/empire/) fractured among his generals. From this division arose powerful states such as the [Ptolemaic Kingdom](https://www.worldhistory.org/Ptolemaic_Egypt/) in [Egypt](https://www.worldhistory.org/egypt/) (305–30 BCE), the [Seleucid Empire](https://www.worldhistory.org/Seleucid_Empire/) in the [Near East](https://www.worldhistory.org/Near_East/) (312–63 BCE), and the Antigonid Kingdom in [Macedon](https://www.worldhistory.org/macedon/) and [Greece](https://www.worldhistory.org/greece/) (276–168 BCE). These monarchies blended Greek and local traditions, becoming centers of politics, [culture](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/culture/), and scholarship that defined the [Hellenistic world](https://www.worldhistory.org/Hellenistic_Period/).

The Diadochi period was marked by constant wars and shifting alliances as rival dynasties sought to expand or defend their territories. The Wars of the Successors (322–281 BCE) culminated in the [Battle](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/battle/) of Corupedium (281 BCE), after which the three main dynasties stabilized. Each kingdom fostered advances in art, [science](https://www.worldhistory.org/science/), and [philosophy](https://www.worldhistory.org/philosophy/), with [Alexandria](https://www.worldhistory.org/alexandria/) in Egypt, [Antioch](https://www.worldhistory.org/Antiochia/) in [Syria](https://www.worldhistory.org/syria/), and [Pergamon](https://www.worldhistory.org/pergamon/) in [Asia Minor](https://www.worldhistory.org/Asia_Minor/) emerging as leading cultural hubs. Though eventually absorbed by [Rome](https://www.worldhistory.org/Rome/), the Hellenistic kingdoms left a deep legacy, spreading [Greek culture](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Greek_Culture/) across the [Mediterranean](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/mediterranean/) and Western Asia and shaping the intellectual foundations of later civilizations.
