## Image Caption

The so-called Gate of [Hercules](https://www.worldhistory.org/hercules/) is the oldest [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/) gate in Pula (Croatia). Architecturally modest, it stands as a single-arched stone gate with, at the top, a worn carving relief of the head of Hercules with his club. The gate was built during the founding of the city in 47-44 BCE by two [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) officials, Lucius Calpurnius Piso Caesoninus and Quintus Cassius Longinus.
