## Image Caption

Artist's impression of an animal sacrifice. In most cultures around the ancient [Mediterranean](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/mediterranean/), including [Greece](https://www.worldhistory.org/greece/) and [Rome](https://www.worldhistory.org/Rome/), animals were frequently sacrificed as an offering to the gods. The gods were believed to feast upon the smells of the burning animal, while much of the meat was given to humans to eat.
