## Image Caption

Artist's impression of Queen [Dido](https://www.worldhistory.org/Dido/) (also known as [Elissa](https://www.worldhistory.org/Dido/)) landing on the shores of North [Africa](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/africa/) and claiming the land where she founded [Carthage](https://www.worldhistory.org/carthage/).

According to legend, when Queen Dido landed in North Africa, the local rulers offered her as much land as she could cover with an oxhide. Cleverly, she had the oxhide cut into very thin strips, knotted them together into a long rope, and managed to encircle a large tract of land to claim for the [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/) of Carthage.
