Fortifications at the site of Kumamoto Castle were first established in 1467, and the [castle keep](https://www.worldhistory.org/Castle_Keep/) was expanded considerably over the following years. It gained a reputation of impregnability due to its extensive defenses. The castle was demolished in 1877 during the Satsuma Rebellion, but was reconstructed in 1960. Kumamoto Prefecture, [Japan](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Japan/).
