The 'Great [Stupa](https://www.worldhistory.org/stupa/)' located at Sanchi, a village in the Raisen District of the state of Madhya Pradesh, [India](https://www.worldhistory.org/india/). This stupa was originally commissioned by the emperor [Ashoka the Great](https://www.worldhistory.org/Ashoka_the_Great/) in the 3rd century BCE. According to some [Buddhist](https://www.worldhistory.org/buddhism/) accounts, it was built over the relics of the [Buddha](https://www.worldhistory.org/Siddhartha_Gautama/).
