[Ashoka](https://www.worldhistory.org/Ashoka_the_Great/)'s pillar erected in the district of Vaishali, located in the Bihar state, [India](https://www.worldhistory.org/india/). This is one of the nineteen surviving columns erected or at least inscribed with edicts by the Emperor Ashoka during his reign in the 3rd century BCE. These columns are also referred to as the "Pillars of Ashoka" and they are dispersed throughout the northern Indian subcontinent. Many are preserved in a fragmentary state, averaging between forty and fifty feet in height, and weighing up to fifty tons each, the pillars were dragged, sometimes hundreds of miles, to where they were erected.
