The theatre was built into a natural hill during the 3rd century BCE. It underwent several phases of modification during the reign of Philip V (r. 221-179 BCE) and the [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) period. Theatrical games were held at the theatre, including the nine-day festival in honour of the Nine Pierian [Muses](https://www.worldhistory.org/muse/).
