# Arch of San Damiano in Carsulae, Italy

## Image Caption

The Arch of San Damiano was the northern gate to the [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/) of Carsulae ([Italy](https://www.worldhistory.org/italy/)). It was built under [Augustus](https://www.worldhistory.org/augustus/) between 27 BCE and 14 CE at the same time as the Via Flaminia was repaved. The Arch of San Damiano originally consisted of three arched openings. The larger, central arch was wide enough for vehicular traffic, with smaller archways on either side aligning with the raised sidewalks of the street.
