The 1915 Red Cross with Triptych Egg by Peter Carl Fabergé (1846-1920). The egg was given by [Tsar Nicholas II](https://www.worldhistory.org/Tsar_Nicholas_II/) (r. 1894-1917) to his wife Alexandra Feodorovna. The egg commemorates the founding of the Russian Red Cross by the empress. It is made of [gold](https://www.worldhistory.org/gold/) with white and red enamel. The portraits represent two of the [tsar](https://www.worldhistory.org/Tsar/)'s daughters - Olga and Tatiana - who served in the Red Cross during WWI. The surprise inside the egg shows [Jesus Christ](https://www.worldhistory.org/Jesus_Christ/)'s resurrection with two saints, the patron saint of each daughter. The egg is notably less ostentatious than earlier eggs and perhaps reflects the more sombre times of the period. It measures 86 cm (3.4 in) in height.
