The 1912 Imperial Tsarevich Egg by Peter Carl Fabergé (1846-1920). The egg was given by [Tsar Nicholas II](https://www.worldhistory.org/Tsar_Nicholas_II/) (r. 1894-1917) to his wife Alexandra Feodorovna. The egg is made of [gold](https://www.worldhistory.org/gold/) and six lapis lazuli sections with diamond decoration. The latticework in gold shows double-headed eagles, and at the top of the egg is a large flat diamond. The surprise is a miniature painting by Zuiev in a large ornate diamond-studded frame, again of a double-headed eagle design. The portrait is of Tsarevich Alexei, the only son of the [tsar](https://www.worldhistory.org/Tsar/) and the empress. The egg measures 12.4 cm (4.9 in) in height.
