The 1914 [Mosaic](https://www.worldhistory.org/Mosaic/) Egg by Peter Carl Fabergé (1846-1920). The egg was given by [Tsar Nicholas II](https://www.worldhistory.org/Tsar_Nicholas_II/) (r. 1894-1917) to his wife Alexandra Feodorovna. The egg is made of platinum set with a mosaic design of flowers. The pieces of the mosaic are diamonds, sapphires, rubies, emeralds, topazes, and garnets. The surprise inside the egg is a sepia grisaille enamel showing miniature portraits of the [tsar](https://www.worldhistory.org/Tsar/)'s children. The pedestal and frame is of [gold](https://www.worldhistory.org/gold/) and decorated with diamonds and pearls. The egg measures 9.2 cm (3.6 in) in height.
