## Image Caption

A c. 1909 pastel portrait by Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865-1931) of a Kikuyu man, Kenosua. The [Kikuyu people](https://www.worldhistory.org/Kikuyu_People/) began to occupy central Kenya from the 17th century and remain its largest ethnic group. Kenousa was an assistant and friend of the artist when he was in East [Africa](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/africa/). The portrait is an example of expressionism, a style which looks entirely subjectively at the subject in order to create a certain emotional response in the viewer.

Private Collection.
