Augusta Emerita (modern-day Mérida in Spain) was a [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) colony established by [Augustus](https://www.worldhistory.org/augustus/) in 25 BCE. The [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/) was the capital of the Roman province of Lusitania, and was one of the largest in Hispania with an area of over 20,000 square kilometres (7,700 sq miles). The rectangular plan typical of Roman towns is still reflected in the modern town. Augusta Emerita possessed two fora, three [aqueducts](https://www.worldhistory.org/aqueduct/) and a number of public buildings such baths, temples, basilicas, and was equipped with recreational spaces, including a [theatre](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/theatre/), an [amphitheatre](https://www.worldhistory.org/amphitheatre/) and a [circus](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Circus/).
