10th-century runestones at Jelling, Denmark. The smaller stone was erected by Harald Bluetooth’s father Gorm in honour of his wife Thyra before 958. The larger stone honours Harald's parents and proclaims his achievements: "Harald the king ordered this monument made in memory of Gorm, his father, and Thyra, his mother. That Harald who won for himself all of Denmark and Norway and made the Danes Christian" (Price, 277). It contains two impressive images, one with a serpent figure and the other with the crucified Christ.
