## Image Caption

Wood-handled steel axe with [gold](https://www.worldhistory.org/gold/) decoration, engraved with the insignia of a Mamluk emir who held the honour of being cupbearer to the sultan. Used by a member of an axe-bearing corps, possibly similar to the [Varangian Guard](https://www.worldhistory.org/Varangian_Guard/) which protected the [Byzantine](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Byzantine/) Emperors. Height of 72.3 cm (28 1/2) x blade width of 23.5 cm (9 1/4 in). Weight: 1341 g (2 lb. 15 oz). Collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
