An illustration of the [Battle](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/battle/) of [Alexandria](https://www.worldhistory.org/alexandria/) that took place on the twenty-first of March, 1801 CE by the English painter Philip James de Loutherbourg (1740-1812 CE), which was between the French army under General Jacques-François Menou (1750-1810 CE) and the British expeditionary corps under Sir Ralph Abercrombie (1731-1801 CE). The battle ended with the British advancing upon Alexandria and laying siege to it, and the surrender of the French army who had invaded [Egypt](https://www.worldhistory.org/egypt/) earlier.
