The painting depicts the patriot Patrick Henry proclaiming, "If this be treason, make the most of it!" in opposition to [Britain](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Britain/)'s [Stamp Act](https://www.worldhistory.org/Stamp_Act/) of 1765 CE. The work is one of Rothermel's most famous pieces and depicts Henry as a larger-than-life patriot standing for the cause of liberty against an audience cowed by the fear of opposing British rule of the North American colonies.
