*Ruins of [Jamestown](https://www.worldhistory.org/Jamestown_Colony_of_Virginia/), 1676.* Illustration from page 45 of *A School History of the United States, from the Discovery of America to the Year 1878* by David B. Scott, New York, Harper & brothers, 1879 CE.

The engraving depicts the ruins of Jamestown following [Bacon's Rebellion](https://www.worldhistory.org/Bacon's_Rebellion/) of 1676 CE during which Jamestown was burned to the ground. This event was the climax of the rebellion after which it dissipated when its leader, Nathaniel [Bacon](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Bacon/), died of dysentery. Other major participants were then hanged by Governor [George Berkeley](https://www.worldhistory.org/George_Berkeley/).
