## Image Caption

Powhatan's Mantle, lithography of the deerskin shirt said to have been worn by [Chief Powhatan](https://www.worldhistory.org/Chief_Powhatan/) (l. c. 1547 - c. 1618 CE), leader of the [Powhatan Confederacy](https://www.worldhistory.org/Powhatan_Confederacy/).

Image cropped from plate XX of “Notes on Powhatan’s Mantle, Preserved in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.” by Edward B. Tylor, Internationales Archiv für Ethnographie, volume 1, 1888 CE, pages 215-217.

[Wahunsenacah](https://www.worldhistory.org/Chief_Powhatan/) did give a deerskin shirt to Captain Christopher Newport (l. 1561-1617 CE) after his coronation ritual in 1609 CE but there is no way of knowing whether this is that shirt or whether it has any actual association with Chief Powhatan.
