## Image Caption

The inscription on the arch of [Septimius Severus](https://www.worldhistory.org/Septimius_Severus/) in [Rome](https://www.worldhistory.org/Rome/) (203 CE). It is repeated on both façades, and shows that the [triumphal arch](https://www.worldhistory.org/Triumphal_Arch/) was dedicated to Emperor Septimius Severus and his two sons [Caracalla](https://www.worldhistory.org/Caracalla/) and Geta who ‘restored the Republic and expanded the dominion of the [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) people’ in successful military campaigns against the Parthians.
