[Baalbek](https://www.worldhistory.org/Baalbek/) is an ancient Phoenician [city](https://www.worldhistory.org/city/) located in what is now modern-day Lebanon, in the northern part of the Beqaa Valley, a fertile area with plentiful springs. First settled at the beginning of the 3rd millennium BCE, Baalbek was an essential waypoint on the Phoenician [trade](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/trade/) route from [Tyre](https://www.worldhistory.org/Tyre/) to Damascus and grew into an important pilgrimage where the [god](https://www.worldhistory.org/God/) [Baal](https://www.worldhistory.org/baal/), the sun god, was worshipped alongside his consort [Astarte](https://www.worldhistory.org/astarte/), the Queen of Heaven.
