The Castillo or [Pyramid](https://www.worldhistory.org/pyramid/) of [Kukulcan](https://www.worldhistory.org/Kukulcan/) at the [Maya](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Maya/) (and possibly later [Toltec](https://www.worldhistory.org/Toltec_Civilization/)) centre of [Chichen Itza](https://www.worldhistory.org/Chichen_Itza/), Yucatan, Mexico. The pyramid was built prior to 1050 CE as a [temple](https://www.worldhistory.org/temple/) to honour the Maya feathered-serpent [god](https://www.worldhistory.org/God/) Kukulkan. The steps create a shadow effect similar to a feathered serpent climbing the pyramid.
