## Image Caption

The Trier [amphitheatre](https://www.worldhistory.org/amphitheatre/) was built towards the end of the 2nd century CE, and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is estimated that it once held up to 18,000 spectators for [gladiator](https://www.worldhistory.org/gladiator/) tournaments and animal fights. The arena measured 75 x 50 metres (246 x 164 ft) and was surrounded by a [wall](https://www.worldhistory.org/wall/) up to four (13 ft) metres high that served to protect the spectators as well as to afford a better view.
