[Bronze](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/bronze/) cast (1899 CE) after the original full-size statue (1883-1886 CE) by [Augustus](https://www.worldhistory.org/augustus/) Saint-Gaudens. Although the figure began as an individual portrait of Deacon [Samuel](https://www.worldhistory.org/samuel/) Chapin (1595–1675 CE), a prominent early settler of Springfield, it developed into a representation of an ideal, the [Puritan](https://www.worldhistory.org/Puritans/) dogma.
