The Moselle Valley is known as Germany's oldest wine-growing region and is home to the world's steepest vineyards. The Romans brought viticulture to this area and planted vines along the Moselle River 2000 years ago. Along the entire Moselle from Trier to Koblenz, archaeologists have found remains of [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) estates, temples, mausolea, and various wine presses at the foot of several vineyard slopes. They constitute the most extensive collection of Roman ruins north of the Alps.
