The Igel [Column](https://www.worldhistory.org/column/) is a multi-storey [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) sandstone funerary monument located on the left bank of the Moselle some eight kilometres south of Trier. It was erected around 250 CE by two wealthy merchants of [Celtic](https://www.worldhistory.org/celt/) origin, the brothers Secundinius Aventinus and Secundinius Securus, for themselves and their deceased relatives. Measuring 23 metres (75 ft) in height, the mausoleum was richly decorated with mythological scenes and motifs from everyday life.
