According to the Gospel of Matthew, the [Roman](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Roman/) governor [Pontius Pilate](https://www.worldhistory.org/Pontius_Pilate/) tried to save Christ from [death](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Death/) and symbolically washed his hands, stating “I am innocent of the blood of this righteous person.”
