## Image Caption

An illustration of what the [Circus Maximus](https://www.worldhistory.org/Circus_Maximus/) [chariot](https://www.worldhistory.org/chariot/) track of [Rome](https://www.worldhistory.org/Rome/) might have looked like. The [Circus](https://www.worldhistory.org/disambiguation/Circus/) Maximus dates back to the 6th century BCE but was at its most splendid in the 1st century CE when it had a capacity for 250,000 spectators who watched chariot races, games, gladiatorial contests and public executions.
