Swayambhunath [Stupa](https://www.worldhistory.org/stupa/) in Kathmandu (also given as Svayambhunath, Swoyambhu) has mythological origins as suggested by the name which means “self-created”. Historically, it was most likely built in the 5th century CE at a site already consecrated to the [Buddha](https://www.worldhistory.org/Siddhartha_Gautama/) by [Ashoka the Great](https://www.worldhistory.org/Ashoka_the_Great/) in the 3rd century BCE and then enlarged and expanded upon later.
