A detail from [Trajan's Column](https://www.worldhistory.org/Trajans_Column/) in the [Forum Romanum](https://www.worldhistory.org/Roman_Forum/) of [Rome](https://www.worldhistory.org/Rome/). Erected in 113 CE the [column](https://www.worldhistory.org/column/) and its reliefs commemorate the emperor's campaigns in [Dacia](https://www.worldhistory.org/dacia/). The reliefs are an invaluable source of information on the [Roman army](https://www.worldhistory.org/Roman_Army/) and depict such military subjects as weapons, armour, ships, fortifications and troop formations.
